14 Jan Meet, Greet, and Hire a Web Developer

An interface-friendly app that helps you find the best coffee in New York City. A visualization of words and their etymological connections. A mechanical bird that automatically sends a poem to the phone of a loved one.

From theBlog Post Photo_General Assembly pragmatic to the esoteric, these web applications are products of General Assembly’s Web Development Immersive, a program that not only provides skill sets and fluency in full stack web development to its students, but also hands-on experience to develop apps, along with a portfolio that displays individual and group projects.

Graduates of the program will visit the Brooklyn Tech Triangle this week as part of a Junior Developer Meet & Greet to engage with tech companies in the area about potential projects and job opportunities. This free hiring event will be hosted at the IFP Media Center in DUMBO tomorrow, January 15, from 6pm to 8:30pm. Designed as a showcase, job-seeking graduates will exhibit their projects and portfolios. Invited employers will have the opportunity to talk to graduates individually, learn more about their interests, and explore full-time, part-time, or contract capacities.

Such interactive engagements between employers and prospective employees have proven successful. In a September Meet & Greet, five of its 13 job-seeking graduates received full-time offers through the event and are still working at their workplace. Seven of the remaining graduates received job offers through other channels. This success is driven largely by General Assembly’s model of hands-on education.

“Trying to learn programming from a book is hard because most assume you know way more than you do,” says Larry Buchanan, who matriculated from the program in December 2012. “At General Assembly, the instructor started from square one and within a few weeks, we were building full-fledged apps.”

Beyond web development, General Assembly offers full-time immersive programs, courses, classes, and workshops that prepare individuals for 21st century skills in user experience design, business fundamental, product management, and digital marketing.
